Leadership Tip

How to make mentoring work remotely

Workers in the office spend 25% more time on career-development activities than their remote counterparts, according to a recent study by Bloomberg. It also found that employees who came into work devoted about 40 more minutes a week to mentoring others. But with hybrid and remote models here to stay, can a better balance be struck for those workers who don't come into the office? There are ways to improve the experience of online mentoring and training. For example:

  1. Embrace the technology. With scheduling, video conferencing and live documents, we’ve got the tech tools to successfully mentor and train remotely.

  2. Identify problems and solve them. For example, to solve the problem of too many online meetings, introduce no-meeting days and normalise asynchronous communication, where staff can catch up on recorded meeting and training when they have time.

  3. Provide the right opportunities. Encourage one-to-one online meetings to create a virtual open-door policy for mentees to reach out; host workshops and knowledge sharing sessions; encourage self-driven learning by making resources and training available to staff.
