Fair winds and following seas and the lessons that stay with you

This week, ships of the Royal Navy, including HMS Prince of Wales, have slipped their lines and headed out on an 8-month deployment - sailing not just into open waters, but into an increasingly uncertain world. While the headlines may move on, these deployments are a stark reminder of the constant, quiet work being done by the men and women who serve at sea - often far from home, and always far from ordinary.

In these troubled and uncertain times, the role of the Royal Navy is more vital than ever. From deterring aggression to delivering humanitarian aid, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our allies, or quietly gathering intelligence where it matters most - the White Ensign continues to fly in defence of the values we hold dear.

I joined the Royal Navy at 16, fresh out of Liverpool with more cheek than experience. The Royal Navy gave me a purpose, a compass, and a career that spanned almost 30 years. I was born in Liverpool, but I was made in the Royal Navy. And though my sea legs are now firmly ashore, my heart still sails with every ship that leaves harbour.

So as today’s sailors head into their own chapters of challenge and growth, I wanted to share 10 leadership lessons I learned along the way:

  1. Lead by example. Show up first, leave last, and never ask someone to do what you wouldn’t do yourself. Credibility is earned daily.
  2. Keep a steady hand. Whether in a storm at sea or a crisis on land, people look to their leaders for calm - not panic.
  3. Listen hard, speak straight. Listening builds trust. Honesty builds respect. Do both often.
  4. Praise in public, correct in private. The right word at the right time can lift someone for a week—or humble them for a lifetime. Use that power wisely.
  5. Know your people. Not just their roles, but their strengths, worries, and aspirations. Connection beats command every time.
  6. Own your mistakes. Blame travels fast, but accountability earns loyalty. Step up, fix it, and move on.
  7. Keep learning. Rank doesn’t mean you’ve arrived. Be curious, seek feedback, and stay humble.
  8. Laugh when you can. Morale matters. A well-timed joke at sea can do more than a speech.
  9. Always be prepared. Whether it’s kit, contingency, or mindset—readiness is respect in action.
  10. Leadership is service. It’s not about being in charge; it’s about taking care of those in your charge.

To those now deployed: I salute you. Your professionalism, resilience, and quiet courage are not just appreciated - they’re admired. And to the families standing strong at home: you are the unsung heroes of every deployment. Thank you for your strength, your patience, and your love.

Fair winds and following seas.
