Turning pages, changing lives

This year, World Book Day will be celebrated on Thursday, 6 March 2025. World Book Day reminds us of the magic held within the pages of a book. It’s more than just a celebration of literature - it’s a global movement that promotes the joy of reading, the power of storytelling, and the importance of education. Whether you’re a lifelong book lover or someone rediscovering the pleasure of reading, the day is a chance to embrace the written word in all its forms.

Books have shaped cultures, sparked revolutions, and transported readers to worlds beyond their imagination. They preserve history, challenge perspectives, and inspire innovation. A single book has the power to change a life, whether by introducing new ideas, offering comfort, or simply providing a much-needed escape.

For children, books open doors to new worlds, fuel creativity, and develop critical thinking skills. Encouraging a love of reading from a young age sets the foundation for lifelong learning. For adults, reading offers a way to expand knowledge, relax, and even build empathy by seeing the world through different eyes.

World Book Day isn’t just about appreciating literature - it’s about ensuring access to books for everyone, regardless of background. Many organisations use this day to promote literacy initiatives, distribute books to children, and advocate for education. In some parts of the world, books remain a luxury, making this day a powerful reminder of the need to support literacy efforts worldwide.

Among the many inspiring works celebrated on World Book Day, one book stands out as a personal favourite: Longitude by Dava Sobel. This remarkable work blends history, science, and storytelling to recount the riveting quest to solve one of navigation’s oldest problems - the determination of longitude at sea.

Longitude tells the story of John Harrison, an ingenious clockmaker whose persistent efforts led to the invention of a reliable marine chronometer. Sobel’s narrative not only illuminates the technical challenges and breakthroughs of the 18th century but also humanises the struggles, rivalries, and triumphs that accompanied this monumental achievement. The book is a testament to the power of curiosity, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge, reflecting the very spirit of discovery that World Book Day celebrates.

By reading Longitude, we are reminded that every problem has a solution waiting to be uncovered, often requiring a blend of creativity, innovation, and a passion for understanding the world. This story of transformation - where precise timekeeping revolutionised global navigation - serves as an inspiring example of how books can change our perspective on history and science.

Books connect us across time, cultures, and experiences. Whether fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose, books remind us that stories are at the heart of what it means to be human. On World Book Day, let’s celebrate the incredible gift of reading and ensure that everyone has the chance to experience the magic of books.

HOW TO CELEBRATE WORLD BOOK DAY
