How to become more valuable

Getting ahead at work isn’t about staying late, brown-nosing the boss, or volunteering for every shiny new project. It’s about proving you’re indispensable by focusing your energy where it really counts. The most valuable people in any organisation don’t just do more, they do what matters most. Here are three ways to raise your stock:

  1. Think like a shareholder. Ask what’s keeping senior leaders awake at night. Align your daily work to those concerns.
     
  2. Focus on priorities. With your manager, agree on two or three actions that drive revenue or profit, then pour most of your effort there.
     
  3. Choose deliberately. Not everything is mission-critical. Push back where you can, and consciously shortchange the low-value stuff.
