People don't leave organisations, clubs or communities simply because of the work. People rarely leave organisations, clubs or communities simply because of the work. More often, they leave because they no longer feel they belong. Leaders cannot control every disagreement or disappointment, but they can create an environment where people feel valued, connected and part of something worthwhile. A strong sense of belonging doesn't happen by chance. It is built deliberately, one interaction at a time. Here are three ways to strengthen it:
-
Give people a guide.
Whether someone is joining a company, a volunteer group or a sports club, make it clear who they can turn to. Knowing someone has your back builds confidence from day one.
-
Build relationships, not just teams.
Create opportunities for people to connect. Pair those with complementary strengths, shared interests or similar goals. Communities grow stronger one relationship at a time.
-
Create a shared identity.
Help people understand what the group stands for, what makes it unique and how they contribute to its success. People commit more deeply when they feel they're part of something bigger than themselves.
