The most successful leaders don’t just manage performance. They make people feel seen, heard and valued. Everyone wants to know that what they do matters, but recognition isn’t one-size-fits-all. Great leadership means understanding what makes each individual feel appreciated, then responding in a way that resonates with them. Four ways to make people feel valued:
-
Ask what energises them.
Encourage people to identify the parts of their work they love and those they find draining. Understanding both helps you play to their strengths.
-
Recognise the individual.
Some people value public praise, others a quiet word of thanks. Learn how each person prefers to be recognised.
-
Support them through change.
People respond differently to uncertainty. Tailor your communication to reinforce purpose, provide reassurance or create opportunity, depending on the individual.
-
Show appreciation regularly.
Don’t wait for annual reviews or major achievements. A sincere thank you, timely feedback or simple acknowledgement can have a lasting impact.
