Technical knowledge may get you noticed, but it is rarely what makes people want to follow you. As leaders become more senior, success depends increasingly on judgement, communication, empathy and the ability to influence without relying on authority. These so-called power skills are not soft at all. They are often the hardest skills to develop because they require self-awareness, discipline and practice.
-
LISTEN TO UNDERSTAND
Do not listen simply to prepare your reply. Ask better questions, leave space for silence and make sure you understand what is really being said before offering a solution.
-
GET CLOSER TO THE WORK
Reports and dashboards are useful, but they rarely tell the whole story. Spend time with the people doing the job. Watch what happens. Ask what gets in their way.
-
SEEK DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES
Surrounding yourself with people who think like you may feel comfortable, but it rarely improves your judgement. Invite challenge and listen carefully when someone sees the world differently.
-
PRACTISE SELF AWARENESS
Pay attention to how your behaviour affects others. Notice when people become quieter, more defensive or less willing to challenge you. Leadership begins with understanding the impact you have.
-
KEEP LEARNING
The moment you think you have mastered leadership is usually the moment you start becoming less effective. Stay curious, ask for feedback and keep refining how you lead.
