Leadership Tip

HOW TO READ THE ROOM

Good leaders notice what is said, and what is not. Eye contact, facial expression, posture and physical distance can all offer clues about how someone is feeling, but no single signal tells the whole story. The trick is to observe patterns without rushing to judgement.

  1. Watch for changes
Notice when someone’s behaviour shifts from their normal pattern. A change is often more revealing than the behaviour itself.

  2. Look for clusters
Avoid reading too much into one gesture. Several signals appearing together are far more meaningful.

  3. Compare, don’t assume
People communicate differently. What looks like disengagement in one person may simply be their natural style.

  4. Ask when in doubt
Observation should prompt curiosity, not conclusions. A simple question will usually tell you more than silent speculation ever will.
