You cannot force accountability, but you can make it easier for people to choose it. When pressure rises, the instinct is often to tighten control. Better leaders create the conditions in which ownership becomes the natural response. When people know what they own, what good looks like and that they will be supported, accountability becomes far more likely.
-
DEFINE IT
Involve people in deciding what accountability looks like in day-to-day work. Ask where blame, avoidance or ambiguity currently shows up, then agree clear standards for ownership.
-
PRACTISE IT
Make accountability a habit, not a one-off conversation. Ask for feedback, name ownership early and acknowledge mistakes without defensiveness.
-
MAKE IT VISIBLE
Create regular opportunities to reflect on where people took ownership, what changed and what was learned.
-
LINK IT TO RESULTS
Show how accountability improves clarity, prioritisation and follow-through. When people see that ownership produces better outcomes, they are far more likely to keep choosing it.
