Time is the one resource we cannot replace, yet too often we allow other people, competing demands and constant interruptions to determine how we spend it. Timeboxing offers a practical solution by allocating specific periods in your diary to important tasks and commitments. Rather than simply writing another to-do list, you decide when the work will actually get done. Here are three ways to make it work.
-
Start with a daily planning meeting
Reserve 15 minutes each morning to review your priorities and organise your day. Include personal commitments such as exercise, reading and time with family, not just meetings and work. Decide what matters most and give it a place in your diary.
-
Focus on one thing at a time
When distractions arise, remind yourself and your team of a simple principle: one task, one time slot, one focus. Resist the temptation to multitask. Return to your schedule and concentrate on completing the task in front of you.
-
Adjust your diary as priorities change
Timeboxing is about discipline, not rigidity. Unexpected demands will arise, and some tasks will take longer than anticipated. Reassess priorities, move commitments when necessary and protect time for what matters most.
