How to successfully navigate Blue Monday

This time of year can be hard for some people: the Christmas break is fading into memory, pay day is still a couple weeks away and the weather is grey and cold. It's no wonder that by the third Monday in January we’re hit with the blues. Life gets busy and it’s easy to forget to check in with our own wellness, but the new year is the perfect time to start. Why not try some of these simple ideas to show yourself to help you get through the day and beyond:

  • Set a realistic resolution. In terms of New Year's resolutions think about setting yourself a challenge which is achievable. This can be much more rewarding than putting on the pressure to complete a massive challenge, which might feel overwhelming.

  • Get physical. While you may not feel like it, physical activity can be very effective in lifting your mood and increasing your energy levels. Research shows that outdoor exercise, such as cycling or jogging, can be as effective as antidepressants in treating depression.

  • If all else fails, make a cuppa. I appreciate the importance of a good cup of tea. Put the kettle on, grab your favourite type of tea [mine is Yorkshire Tea], and have a brew; with your feet up, of course.
