10 actions for advancing your career

Standing out at work isn’t about wearing a flashy hat - though, that could help. The more effective way to make an impact is by developing the skills that will get you noticed. Here are 10 strategies for advancing your career:

  1. Make skills transferable. The key to success lies in ensuring your skills are both current and adaptable. Leadership, managing change, and stakeholder engagement are valuable skills across industries. Whatever sector you’re in, these abilities will set you apart.

  2. Create a career plan. Most of us spend more time researching vacation spots than we do planning our career paths. Start by crafting a clear roadmap for your professional growth. When opportunities arise, you'll be prepared to recognise and seize them.

  3. Assess compatibility. Before you join an organization, take time to understand its culture and values. Does it encourage creativity? Does it align with your motivation and working style? Make sure the environment suits your strengths and ambitions.

  4. Find a mentor. Look for people you admire and study what makes them successful. Learn from their experiences and insights. A mentor can provide valuable guidance to accelerate your own career growth.

  5. Embrace flexibility. Change is constant in today’s workplace. To thrive, you need to be adaptable and resilient. Equip yourself with tools to manage change and cope with stress. The sooner you learn to navigate these challenges, the better.

  6. Understand what matters. Different industries prioritize different qualities. In some fields, precision is crucial, while in others, speed is the key. Understand the success factors in your environment, then align your skills to meet those demands.

  7. Self-reflect and assess. To evaluate your progress, look at your impact. If you’re being asked to lead new projects, great. If not, it’s time to reflect on why and adjust your approach or performance.

  8. Step outside your comfort zone. Don’t shy away from new challenges just because you don’t have all the answers. If you’re honest about what you know and what you need help with, people will be more likely to support you, and you’ll gain invaluable experience.

  9. Pace yourself. Taking on too much or setting overly ambitious goals can set you up for failure. Be realistic about your limits and schedule time for other opportunities that will help you grow. Balance is essential for long-term success.

  10. Make sure you’re seen. It’s no use keeping your achievements under wraps. Be confident in showcasing your talents. If you have a great idea, speak up! You have to be bold enough to stand out and let your contributions be known.
