Sometimes, difficult people are not so easy to recognise. A situation can make a person difficult. Someone who refuses to budge an inch from their stance or opinion can create a miserable workplace atmosphere. Here are some effective tactics you can apply to deal with your difficult colleagues:
-
Detach yourself. Don’t allow the person to see you wound up or behaving irrationally.
-
Don’t’ take it personally. It helps to be aware of cultural differences that might be behind someone’s behaviour; it’s not personal.
-
Pick your battles. Do a mental cost-benefit analysis on a workplace relationship. It may be that the negatives of getting involved outweigh the benefits.
-
Seperate person and issue. Be soft on the person, hard on the issue. This enables you to manage the difficult relationship whilst achieving what you need.
- Inject some humour. Many difficult situations can be deflected with a disarming smile or a good dose of well-timed humour.
