January is when intentions are declared. Leadership is what happens after the declarations fade. Leadership isn’t about heroic starts, it’s about boring consistency. January rewards enthusiasm. February rewards discipline. If you want resolutions - personal or organisational - to survive beyond week three, do three things.
-
First, design behaviour, not ambition. Vague goals inspire speeches but not action. “Get fitter” fails. “Walk for 20 minutes after breakfast” works.
-
Second, make progress visible. Leaders underestimate how motivating evidence is. Track it. Tick it. Review it weekly. What gets seen gets sustained.
- Third, add light accountability. Not pressure - permission. Share the goal with one person who will notice if you quietly abandon it.
