Sharing something of yourself with your team can build trust and connection. But it can also misfire if done carelessly. A thoughtful disclosure humanises you; an ill-judged one can undermine credibility. Leaders should not hide behind a wall of professionalism, but nor should they overshare. The key is judgement. When you choose to open up, do so with purpose so the moment strengthens trust rather than weakening it.

Speak like a human. People listen as much to how you say something as to what you say. Small conversational touches make you sound natural and present rather than rehearsed. When your language feels fluid and unscripted, people experience you as genuine. Authenticity does not diminish authority; in fact it usually strengthens it.

Show the path forward. Admitting a weakness is not a problem. Leaving it there is. If you acknowledge a shortcoming, explain what you are doing about it. Share what you have learned or what you are changing. This demonstrates self-awareness and growth - two qualities people respect in a leader.

Go first. If you want openness in a team, model it. Share something you are working on and then invite perspective from others. When leaders go first, they lower the barriers for everyone else. The tone you set determines how honestly people feel able to respond.

Don’t turn openness into venting. Complaining about colleagues or speaking negatively about others rarely ends well. Listeners instinctively associate the behaviour you describe with you. Keep disclosures focused on your own work, decisions and learning rather than someone else’s character.
- Notice what people do well. Openness is not only about vulnerability. It is also about appreciation. When leaders take the time to recognise strengths in others, it builds confidence and goodwill. A sincere compliment costs nothing but often carries lasting influence.
