Reading is quietly disappearing. In Britain, just one in three children aged 8–18 read in their spare time, down sharply since 2005. In the US, only 16% of adults read for leisure on an average day, compared with 28% two decades ago. Yet leaders have always been readers. Books slow the mind, deepen thinking, and stretch attention spans in ways social media never will. If you want to sharpen your thinking - and perhaps triple your attention span - try this.
-
Follow the 20–20 Rule. Read for 20 minutes twice a day - morning and evening - and you’ll likely finish around 20 books a year. Hide your phone, make a drink, and sit somewhere comfortable. Small, consistent sessions rebuild concentration surprisingly quickly.
-
Start short. Short stories are perfect for rebuilding the habit. Dip in, finish one piece, and enjoy the small win.
-
Choose print. A paperback removes the temptation to click away. For many people, concentration improves immediately.
-
Read whatever you like. This isn’t an exam. The best book is simply the one you enjoy enough to keep turning the pages.
- Finish what you start. Completing books rebuilds attention and discipline; two habits leaders cannot outsource.
