Leadership Tip

How to turn adversity into advantage

Most CVs tell us what someone has done. The best tell us what they have overcome. Recently, I received a note from a reader who had stepped away from a successful career to raise children, support a husband overseas, nurse a loved one through terminal illness, and later rebuild her life following bereavement. Despite qualifications, experience and determination, she now faces the challenge of rebuilding her career at the age of sixty. Her story reminded me that some of life’s greatest leadership lessons are learned not in boardrooms, classrooms or training courses, but through adversity. Leadership is not measured by how smoothly life unfolds. It is measured by our willingness to keep moving forward when it doesn’t. The question is not what happened to us. The question is what we choose to do with it.

  1. Reframe your setbacks. Every challenge develops skills. Caring responsibilities build empathy. Redundancy builds resilience. Failure builds wisdom. Learn to recognise the strengths hidden within difficult experiences.

  2. Focus on what comes next. Leaders acknowledge the past but refuse to live there. Concentrate your energy on the opportunities ahead rather than the disappointments behind.

  3. Rewrite the narrative. We often describe ourselves by what we have lost. Instead, describe yourself by what you have learned, achieved and become.

  4. Draw confidence from survival. If you have navigated hardship, uncertainty or personal loss, you have already demonstrated qualities many organisations desperately need.

  5. Look beyond the obvious. Whether recruiting, promoting or mentoring others, remember that some of the most valuable capabilities never appear on a résumé.
