Leadership Tip

How to manage an unstructured boss

You’ve landed your dream job, with a boss whose work you admire. But it turns out that boss is not interested in the practical aspects of managing. So what do you do? You can set your own short- and long-term targets, but, better still, you can learn to manage upwards. Here are some tips:

  1. Provide the structure you want: arrange meetings and set the agendas
  2. Mirror the appropriate parts of your boss’s working style
  3. Solicit advice about projects with intriguing details
  4. Mentor someone below you to progress your own development
