As we all navigate the new, more expensive, supply-chain-snarled world amid the Great Reshuffle, workers do not perceive themselves as having as much leverage as they once did. So when and how are the best ways to ask for more money? Try these tips:
- Strategically pick a time following a win, not when your line manager is busy or after a crisis.
- Investigate what your employer and competitors are paying someone in a similar role.
- Ask people who work in your field how much they make - or ask them how much they think you should be paid.
- Make the conversation collaborative, communal and holistic, focusing on how it can help leaders or the organisation.
- Have a specific number in mind and make the first offer. If it's a no, ask what you need to do to get a raise - and then don’t let the conversation stop without concrete specifics.
