The line between work and private life can be blurry these days, especially if your office doubles as a kitchen, bedroom or kids' play area. Even though transitioning from professional to leisure mode can be hard for professionals who work from home, there are ways to avoid the whiplash that occurs when you step between work and home modes. To transition more smoothly between work and home life, try these ideas:
- Building transitions into our day: They can help us shift in the way a commute does, for example by bookending your working day with a short walk or reading a few pages in a book.
- Set up a designated workspace, even if you can't have a separate home office. This will signal to your brain – and any family members – when you're in work mode.
- Consider silencing private messages during work time – which will also help you concentrate better – and scheduling time in which you reply to friends and family.
- Find a ritual to shut down or to start your workday. A short walk or gym workout has become a daily transition ritual for many.
