When emotions run high - whether in love, leadership, or life - we’re tempted to make decisions based on how we feel in the moment. It’s human. But feelings are fluid. They rise, fall, and often mislead. Clarity, by contrast, is stable. It comes from understanding what you truly value, what matters most, and what kind of life or outcome you’re actually trying to build. Without it, decisions drift. With it, they endure. The challenge is simple: slow down enough to think clearly before you act emotionally. Try this:
-
Name the emotion.
Are you acting from fear, excitement, loneliness, or ego? Labelling it reduces its power and stops it driving the decision unchecked.
-
Define what “good” looks like.
Not today, but long term. What outcome would you be proud of in a year’s time?
-
Check for alignment.
Does this decision move you closer to your values, or just relieve short-term discomfort?
-
Create distance before deciding.
Time, space, or a trusted sounding board. Urgency is rarely your friend when clarity matters.
-
Commit with intent.
Once clear, decide, and stand by it. Clarity only works if you’re prepared to act on it.
