Leadership Tip

How to react when you feel you are being overlooked.

Your progress at work and in your career can be influenced to a great extent by your line manager. It can thus be demotivating and career-limiting if your line manager constantly favours your colleague over you. But there are ways in which you can turn this around:

  1. Overdeliver on expectations for a while. You can conduct a timebound experiment of working harder and smarter to gain their acceptance. But avoid overdoing it if you don’t find a reciprocation.
  2. Avoid the drama. Don’t fall into competition with your colleague and don’t consider their relationships with your boss as your business. Focus on your strengths instead.
  3. See the positives. People who are favoured by their bosses feel like others assume their success has nothing to do with their talent. They are also over-relied upon. Be happy knowing that you are in a neutral position with your boss.
  4. Invest in lateral and upward relationships, even as you continue to influence your boss. Trying too hard just to impress one person may distract you from building other relationships that can help you at work.
