On a busy workday, it can be tempting to just power through your ever-growing to-do-list. But this can actually make us less productive. Building in mental breaks are key for maintaining optimal brain function. Here are a number of tricks for staying productive at work.
-
Movement: Physical activity in the morning can help get your brain working. You really want to get your heart pumping and your brain infused with fresh oxygen.
-
Meditation: This practice can reduce brain inflammation and lower stress. It can turn down your arousal systems which makes you less likely to make mistakes or rash decisions.
-
Brainwashing: Simple acts like drinking water or looking out the window can help cleanse the brain. Positive actions such as these help you rinse out and get rid of all the stuff you are focussed on.
-
Meetings: On the go meetings, or walk and talks, avoid the intensity of video calls where the brain works harder to analyse micro-expressions and pupil dilation, for example.
- Fatigue: Beating post-lunch fatigue, or postprandial somnolence, is key to being productive in the afternoon. To combat this, one option is to drink coffee before taking a powernap.
