Leadership Tip

How to maintain your mentoring relationship

Maintaining a strong mentoring relationship requires effort, communication, and mutual respect. By nurturing trust, accountability, and open communication, you can ensure a mentoring relationship remains productive and rewarding for both parties. Here are some key strategies to keep the relationship productive and fulfilling:

  1. Establish clear goals and expectations. Both mentor and mentee should agree on what they hope to achieve from the relationship.

  2. Schedule regular check-ins. Agree on a frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) and stick to it.

  3. Communicate openly and respectfully. Both parties should feel comfortable sharing successes, challenges, and feedback.

  4. Follow through on commitments. If the mentor gives advice or the mentee sets goals, ensure follow-up.

  5. Show appreciation. Acknowledge the mentor’s time, effort, and impact.

  6. Keep boundaries professional. Agree on what is within the scope of the mentoring relationship and respect personal boundaries.

  7. Adapt as needed. Periodically revisit and adjust goals as the mentee progresses.

  8. Seek feedback. Discuss what is working well and what could be improved in the relationship.

  9. Foster mutual learning. Mentors can also learn from their mentees’ perspectives, creating a two-way learning experience.

  10. Know when to transition. Understand when the mentee has achieved their goals and the relationship has served its purpose.
