Leadership Tip

How to be likeable

Being likable isn’t about trying to win popularity contests. It’s about creating genuine human connections - the kind that make people want to work with you, trust you, and follow your lead. And the good news? Likability isn’t a mysterious talent that a few lucky people are born with. It’s built on three core traits: empathy, authenticity, and enthusiasm. Let’s break them down.

  1. Empathy: Show people you understand them. If you want to master your likability, start by truly listening to others. Show people that you hear them and understand them — even if you don’t agree. When people feel seen and heard, they naturally feel connected to you. Empathy isn’t about fixing people’s problems; it’s about acknowledging their feelings and perspectives. In leadership, this is a superpower. It builds trust, loyalty, and fosters an open environment where people feel safe to share ideas.

  2. Authenticity: Be the real you, not the curated “authenticity” of social media. People are drawn to leaders who are comfortable in their own skin. When you are genuinely yourself, confident but not arrogant, you send a powerful message: “You can trust me.” Authenticity builds credibility. Pretence, on the other hand, is easy to spot and hard to respect. So drop the mask. Be you, because the real you is far more magnetic than any polished persona.

  3. Enthusiasm: Let your energy shine because enthusiasm is infectious. People naturally gravitate towards positive energy. Whether you’re leading a meeting, pitching an idea, or simply engaging with your team, let your enthusiasm show. No one wants to spend time around negativity - avoid being the “Negative Nelly” or the “Danny Downer.” Leaders who radiate genuine enthusiasm inspire action and lift the spirits of those around them.
