If your manager frequently assigns tasks that don't align with your goals, it’s important to learn how to set boundaries. It may feel uncomfortable to push back, but with the right approach, you can manage it effectively:
-
Pause before responding. Instead of immediately agreeing or refusing, take a moment to understand the project details and ask for time to evaluate the request. Let them know when you'll get back to them with your thoughts.
-
Plan your response. Use the time you’ve requested to thoughtfully prepare your answer. Develop an alternative plan that still meets your manager's needs but also allows you to stay focused on your priorities.
- Communicate your decision. When you return to your manager, explain how taking on the new task might impact your ability to meet existing deadlines and goals. Present your proposed solution and explain why it offers a better approach for everyone.
