Leadership Tip

How to listen with an open mindset

Leaders need to listen. If we can learn to receive feedback with grace, we may uncover a whole host of people who care about us and are waiting to give us information. Information that could not only help us do a better job, but could help those giving feedback know that they are valuable to us. When did you last take feedback from someone else? Did you let them know? In order to receive feedback with grace, we need to be having an open mindset. That is hard to do. So how do you know if you're open to receiving feedback?

  1. What was the last piece of feedback that you acted on? Think back - when was the last time you got a piece of feedback from someone and then you acted on it? Seriously considered it and acted on it. Bonus indicator that you're open to receiving feedback? After you acted on it, did you go back and let the person who gave you the feedback know? "Thank you. Here's what I did. That was really helpful for me."

  2. When it comes to receiving feedback are there any patterns around who you listen to and who you don't? Think about those people in your life who are able to give you feedback and you receive it with grace. And then think about those you gloss over. Is there a pattern? Challenge the pattern.
