Employee engagement is a dated metric. Organisations should focus on improving effectiveness instead, and to make gains on that front, the goal should be better outcomes. Employees who do deliver better outcomes engage in five identifiable behaviours. Leaders and managers can encourage better outcomes categorising workers into five broad archetypes in order to provide the best support for growth. Here are the five key behaviours that employees who produce better outcomes demonstrate:
- They ask the right questions, like “How might this task/process/problem be made easier/faster/safer/better?”
- They observe, which may mean standing on an assembly line or watching users interact with a product.
- They talk to an outer circle, gathering information and insight from a broad array of experts.
- They do not stagnate, continually fine-tuning and improving upon their work.
- They make the difference, remaining focused on positive outcomes.
