Leadership Tip

How to lead when the ground shifts beneath you

Reform UK’s rise was no minor tremor: 677 councillors. Control of 10 councils. A political earthquake. What looked fringe became frontline - fast. And it happened because people felt unheard, underestimated, and disillusioned with the status quo. Leadership lesson? Don’t wait for a seismic event to realise the ground has been moving for some time. Here’s how to lead when the ground shifts beneath you:

  1. Tune in early and often. Don’t just rely on the loudest voices in the room. Pay attention to quieter signals from the edges - where discontent usually brews first. The signs of change are there, if you’re willing to look and listen.

  2. Challenge the comfort of the status quo. Success can breed complacency. Continually ask: “What are we taking for granted? What’s no longer serving the people we lead?” Be willing to rethink, before events force your hand.

  3. Lead with humility and rebuild trust. When people disengage or push back, resist defensiveness. Instead, listen harder. Trust isn’t restored through messaging - it’s earned through action, consistency, and accountability.
